Poodles make wonderful pets and are smart, trainable dogs. According to the American Kennel Club, they are the seventh most popular breed in the US and all three poodle sizes are adored by pet owners throughout the nation. It is not totally clear about the origins of the breed as they are portrayed in artwork linking them to the European mainland in the 15th century as well as to Spain and French Royalty.

However, Germany also stakes a claim, as its very own Pudelhund was incredibly popular, which literally translates as “to splash about-dog” and this could well have been the original Poodle, especially as they love water. Another option is that Poodles came from a French dog known as the Barbet.

This dog could have been crossed with a Hungarian water dog producing a Poodle. Yet, no matter where the Poodle’s origins lie and the poodle sizes these dogs come in, it is now officially France’s national dog which creates a strong link to that country.

Poodles were bred for many reasons. They were originally bred for water retrieval when hunting with their masters but also as guide dogs and watchdogs, companions, and circus performers. Their high intelligence and trainability make them wonderful service dogs and companions; however, they do require a lot of grooming, irrespective of the type of Poodle.

Poodle Sizes

Poodles come in three size types that can fit into any family or lifestyle and they all have a wonderful temperament. They are highly adaptable and hypoallergenic so are also make great pets for those with allergies.

They come in the size types: Toy Poodle, Miniature Poodle, and Standard Poodle. There are also other sizes known as Teacups, Kings, and Royals but they are sub-categories of the main three.

Other than their actual size, all three are similar in looks. They have long legs, floppy ears, and long noses. Their coats are lovely and curly. Furthermore, Poodle hair is better for allergy sufferers.

If you decide that a Poodle is the dog for you, then choosing a size that works with your lifestyle is important. Your activity, size of family and home are all things to consider as each of the varieties makes a difference depending on the living situation. A Poodle dog can be your outdoor partner, a lap dog, or a carrying companion.

Toy Poodles

Toys are the tiniest of the Poodle sizes. They are 10 inches tall or less when measured at the shoulder and range between five and ten pounds. Teacups are part of this size group and simply smaller Toys. Toys have a lifespan of ten to 18 years. They are easily transportable due to their small size, but this minute size does not mean small personality. They love their owners and enjoy active play time. They need training and socializing to ensure they retain their loving and friendly nature.

Toy Poodle puppies may not be the best choice if you have young children. They do not do well with rough play. They are suitable for single adults, those with grown children, and retired couples. Toys need exercise aside from just playing in the yard. Short walks help keep them healthy and fit. They like daily routines so are great in getting their owners out and exercising. They love balls and other outdoor toys.

Size-specific food is also important for your puppy. Royal Canin for Extra Small dogs is a good quality option.

It is also made using an easily digestible formula and flavor that your Toy Poodle will enjoy. Both size-appropriate toys and quality food will help keep your Toy Poodle healthy and happy.

Miniature Poodles

Miniatures are the next biggest Poodle after Toys. They range from 11 inches to 15 inches from the shoulder and weight from 12 to 17 pounds with a life expectancy of ten to 18 years.  They are great for families with children and love being part of the group. They are similar to Toys in that they need daily exercise. They love to learn and play. Miniatures are great for apartment living but enjoy open spaces as well. They need more activity than a Toy and happy to be on walks or playing catch with something like a tennis ball or disc.
